Bulb Valley

After lowering the large mound by the main entrance of the Pleasure Gardens, a sort of ‘valley’ formed surrounded by low mounds which were left intact in order to preserve mature trees. The Friends had a vision of the valley being covered with flowering bulbs throughout February, March, April, May, June and people flocking to see it.  They called this project Bulb Valley and set out to make it happen. They did all the research and got Lambeth on board for funding with S106 money. DSDHA included the project in the new Masterplan for the gardens and helped with the design and project management.

The project was put out to tender and JUB of Holland was selected to plant 200.700 bulbs in collaboration with Buglife, a charity dedicated to the conservation of bugs and invertebrates. The bulb chosen will attract pollinators and other insects increasing and promoting biodiversity in our park. On the 15th of October 2019 all bulbs were planted by Sjjak of JUB Holland who operated a special machine that can plant on slopes. We shall have the first flowering in Spring 2020. We hope the display of colour will delight local residents and the numerous commuters who pass through the Gardens every day. The Friends also very much hope the Buglife bulb mix will be true to its name and attract many species of insects. It will be the first large planting of its kind in the UK or indeed anywhere else!
